Changing weather is hitting our sinuses harder than we think

Australia’s increasingly unpredictable weather like heatwaves, cold snaps, dry winds, storms, and fluctuating humidity is placing sustained stress on the nasal and sinus system.

Rapid temperature and pressure changes can cause the blood vessels inside the nose to swell, leading to congestion, sinus pressure, and headaches. Dry air further dehydrates the nasal lining, reducing its ability to filter particles and regulate airflow effectively. Over time, this can result in chronic irritation, frequent congestion, and poor sleep quality.

What helps:
Supporting the nose starts with maintaining moisture and reducing environmental load. Staying well hydrated supports mucosal health from the inside, while using gentle saline sprays or rinses can help keep nasal passages clear without stripping natural defences. Indoors, managing dry air with appropriate ventilation or humidification can reduce ongoing irritation.

As climate variability becomes the norm, nasal care should be part of everyday wellness not something reserved for colds or allergy season.
